Abstract

858,519. Filters. TISCHER, E. M. Jan. 13, 1958 [Jan. 11, 1957], No. 1241/58. Class 46. Unfiltered liquid (e.g. lubricating oil) flows at 4 into the space between concentric rings 7 and 9 of each of a number of stacked leaf filter elements 8. The contiguity of the rings 9 seals off this space from the space 9a between the stack and a surrounding cylindrical partition 14. The interior of each filter leaf 8 communicates with the space 9a and 8a. Oncefiltered oil rises through holes in a nut 19 screwed on to the partition and flows down into a space 1b surrounding a stack of fine filter elements 10 each consisting of a strip of straining material wound under tension to form a number of layers on a perforate former 11. The final filtrate emerges at 5. As shown there is provided a bushing 15 in two parts ; an upper part 15b having a top inner flange 16 on to which the leaf elements 8 are pressed by a nut 27 screwed on to a pin 6, and having a further flange 17 to which is secured the partition 14 ; and a lower part 15a having a bottom outer flange 18 on to which the elements 10 are pressed by the nut 19. A spring-pressed valve 25 bearing on the uppermost ring 9 is provided to by-pass unfiltered oil to the secondary stage, and a spring-pressed valve 22 governing an orifice 20 in the part 15b is provided to bypass primary filtrate to the outlet 5. The filter can be dismantled by first removing the cover 2 together with the valve disc 25, then unscrewing the pin 6 from a lower boss la by a screwdriver inserted in a slot 28 and finally lifting the pin until a stop 30 engages the hub 29 of the bushing 15 whereupon the bushing 15 together with both stacks of filter elements is removed as a unit. The filter may be fitted in a marine engine.
