Abstract

570,960. Filters. FRAM, CORPORATION. May 20, 1943, No. 8055. Convention date May 21,1942. [Class 48] A filter comprises two sets of coaxial co-operating surfaces with the members of one set bearing against the members of the other set and the filtering is effected by the liquid flowing between overlapping faces of adjacent members of the two sets, and in a direction parallel to the members, from apertures in one set of members to-apertures in the other set of members, the apertures of the one set of members being covered by solid parts of the other set of members which solid parts-extend slightly over the apertures in the first set of members In the form shown a series of discs 35 with radial slots or apertures 37 Fig. 3, are associated with a series of discs 42 cut to wheel shape Fig 2, the spokes 46 of which cover and overlap the radial slots 37, the filtering being effected by liquid flowing from pockets 48 Fig. 4, formed between the spokes 46, beneath the overlapping face of the spokes to the radial .slots and thence to an axial collecting channel. As the separated particles accumulate in the pockets 48 the filtering is effected by the crevice beneath the cake of particles. The filter shown in Flig. 1 comprises a series of discs 35, Fig. 3. co-operating with wheel-shaped members 42, Fig. 2, the stack being mounted in a container 52 to form a filter cartridge which 'on exhaustion can be removed from the filter casing. The discs and wheel-shaped members which may be of paper or cardboard are assembled in the container 52 by their lugs 41; 47 engaging channel pieces in the container and are held axially under the pressure of a Spring 68 butting on the top wall 60 of the container 52 and acting on a thimble piece 66 to press a top plate 65 down on the stack of members. The container 52 is carried, on a tubular member 75 in the filter casing 70 and this tubular member, is threaded at its top to receive a bolt 80 by which the cover 74 of the filter casing 70 is retained. The liquid to be filtered enters the casing at 71 and passes through apertures 57 in the bottom plate.55 of the container 52 and the aligned apertures 40 of the discs to the pockets 48. Filtering is effected at the boundary edges 49 of these pockets, some filtrate passing radially outward, some passing directly to the central passageway formed by the aligned central apertures 36, 50, and some passing to such passageway by the ducts 37, Fig. 3. The filtrate passing radially outward flows to the top of the container and thence down the inside of the thimble piece 66 to apertures 85 in the tubular member. The filtrate passing to the central passageway of the stack Hows past the bottom of the thimble piece to the interior thereof and so to the apertures 85 of the tubular member. The liquid so filtered passes to the discharge 81.' Other forms of discs and co-operating members are described and shown. It will be seen that the disc and wheel-like members will separate when the pressure becomes excessive and an arrangement is described in Fig. 31 (not shown) whereby the spring-pressure on the stack may be adjusted.
