Abstract

858,389. Malting. OSTERTAG, K. Sept, 5, 1958 [Sept. 26, 1957 (2)], No. 28529/58. Class 14(2) in malting barley, it is washed for about a day in a container 1. The mixture of barley and water is agitated by a stirrer 1b and the water is changed frequently. The water is drained off and the barley is discharged on to the first portion 3 of a perforated germination bed 5, on which the barley is sprayed with water, issuing from the nozzles 7, and aerated with air, blown upwardly through the perforations in the bed by a blower 9. After one day on the first portion of the bed, the barley is turned and moved on to the next portion 4 by a carriage 10, of the kind described in Specification 812,302. The barley remains on the portion 4 for another day, during which it is sprayed with water and aerated. The barley is then turned and moved by the carriage on to further portions of the bed (not shown).
