858,355. Pipe joints. HALL & KAY Ltd. May 20, 1959 [July 9, 1958], No. 21954/58. Class 99(1). In a union for joining axially aligned pipes 6, 7 and comprising a collar 8 of plain outside surface and a flanged collar 14 screwed respectively on the ends of the pipes 6, 7, an internally flanged tightening ring 11, surrounding the collar 8 and locating a sealing washer 13 of rubber or synthetic plastic therearound is screwed on the collar 14 to draw the washer 13 towards the-confronting end of the collar 14 whereby the washer is compressed to provide a seal between the collars 8, 14 and the ring 11, the adjacent pipe and collar ends being respectively --kept spaced apart so that, when using a union at each end of a length of pipe inserted between two fixed pipes, on unscrewing the tightening rings the length of pipe can be removed without axial movement of the fixed pipes. The collar 14 is provided with an annular projection 15 which engages the washer 13 and defines a cavity within which the pipe 6 and collar 8 can take up thermal expansion.
