Class 34(2) The hinged lid 19 of a spin drier is linked by a cord 20 to a U-shaped member 17 hinged at 18 to raise braking surfaces 16 attached thereto into contact with a friction disc 15 attached to a clutch plate 12 or the drive shaft 4 of the drier basket 1 and also to disengage the friction disc from contact with a pulley 9 on the shaft which is driven by a belt 10 from a motor 11. Lowering of the lid causes the breaking surfaces to be lowered which allows a spring 14 to press the clutch plate downwardly and the friction disc into contact with the pulley. The shaft is carried in self-aligning bearings 7 housed in sockets 8.
