Abstract

857,905. Windscreen cleaner systems. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Sept. 25, 1959. [Oct. 6, 1958], No. 32666/59. Addition to 820,776. Class 138(1). The windscreen cleaning system according to the parent Specification is modified in that the counter mechanism, for continuing operation of the wiper unit for a predetermined number of strokes after the washer unit has stopped, includes a pawl and ratchet device driving a cam engageable in one position with a lug member to stop the operation of the washer unit, and a spring member arranged so as, at a predetermined position of the cam, to impart an additional rotary movement to the assembly independently of the drive pawl. In the embodiment illustrated the washer pump bellows 16, Fig. 2, is operated by a receiprocating rod 30 provided with a lug 38 engageable to stop the pump by a cam 40 rotatable with a ratchet 44 (driven by a pawl 73 operated by an oscillating lever 66). As the lug 38 is engaged by the cam 40 a re-entrant portion 100, Fig. 10, of a spring 90 engages the edge 104 of a notch 54 in a further cam 42 integral with the ratchet 44 to move the latter by one tooth independently of the drive pawl 73 to engage the cam 40 firmly with the lug 38.
