[Class 138 (i)] In a wiper-actuating mechanism of the kind in which the wiper-actuating shaft 6 is rotated by a worm 12 fast on a transmission shaft 5 which is slidable in the casing 8 and is connected, through a dutch at its other end, to a moving part of the engine, the casing 8 in which the shaft 6 is mounted is pivoted on a stud 9 projecting from a frame member 10. Freely pivoted on a rock-shaft 28 on the casing is a lever 27 adapted to be moved by a hand control 29 and carrying a stud 25 movable in a cam slot 26 in the member 10 and also a lug 19 adapted to be moved into the path of rotation of anextension 18 of the wiper-actuating crank arm 17. Fixed to the shaft 28 are an arm 30 with a slot 31 engaged by the stud 25 and an arm 32 engaging a slot 33 in a slide 34 mounted to move axially, but not rotatably, with the shaft 5. Fig. 2 shows the wiper-actuating position of the parts. To stop the wiper, the lever 27 is swung clockwise by the control 29 so that the lug 19 arrests the crank arm 17 with the wiper at one end of its stroke. At the same time, the stud 25 moving in the slot 26 rocks the casing 8 to the position shown in Fig. 1, thus moving the shaft 6, and the wiper, to parked position. When the shaft 6 is arrested by the lug 19, the worm 12 rides on the worm wheel 13, moving the shaft 5 axially so as to declutch it from its prime mover. To start the wiper, the lever 27 is returned to the position of Fig. 2. This releases the shaft 6, rocks the casing 8 to operative position, and causes the arm 32 to move the slide 34 to the left to clutch the shaft 5 to the prime mover. The slide 34 is held in its extreme positions by a detent 40 engaging countersunk sockets 41, 42 in the slide.
