Abstract

913,814. Ratchet gearing. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 10, 1959 [Feb. 13, 1958], No. 4625/59. Class 80 (3). [Also in Group XXXV] An electromagnet for step operation of a toothed member has a pivoted L- shaped armature, attached to one limb of which is one end of a pawl comprising a thin resilient rod 16. The free end of the pawl has limited movement in all directions perpendicular to its length but is constrained by a plate attached to the armature to advance the toothed member one step upon energization of the electromagnet. In the de-energized position the pawl is held clear so that the toothed member may be driven in the reverse direction by an opposed but similar device. As shown, the constraining plate 13 has a trapezoidal aperture 14 (Fig. 3) and a notch 17 which forms the rest and driving position for the pawl 16; during return the pawl is free to move across the aperture. Forward movement is limited by a stop 18 on the electromagnet frame, when the pawl, in the notch 17, prevents the ratchet wheel from overrunning. In an alternative arrangement (Figs. 4 to 6, not shown) a ratchet-wheel whose axis is parallel to the length of the electromagnet is driven by a pawl attached at a right-angle to the armature and constrained by the suitably shaped end of a U-bracket also attached at a right-angle to the armature. In either embodiment the ratchet-wheel could be replaced by a toothed rack.
