Abstract

918,940. Ratchet gearing. GRETAG A.G. Nov. 10, 1961 [Nov. 12, 1960], No. 40364/61. Class 80 (3). [Also in Group XIX] In a step-by-step mechanism in which forward and reverse rotations are produced by separate electromagnetically operated pawl-andratchet mechanisms, a control member is movable to two discrete positions to render the non-driving pawl inoperative and the pawls are arranged that energization of the magnet moves the pawl through an idle stroke and de-energization allows an armature spring to produce a rotation of one tooth of the ratchet-wheel. In a stepping mechanism in which a shaft 23, carrying indicating, 26, and printing, 27, figure rollers, is rotated in either direction, the two rotations are produced by similar oppositehanded electromagnets 1F and 1B, the armatures 6F of which operate arms 11F carrying pawls 13F co-operating with forward and backward ratchet-wheels 16F and 16B, respectively, on the shaft 23. A common control member 53 freely mounted on the shaft 23 has an attachment 52F contacted by an extension 51F of the armature arm 11F to move a cam 54B into the path of the pawl 13B to hold it from engagement when the forward magnet 1F is operating, a similar cam 54F restraining the pawl 13F when magnet 1B is energized. Shock-absorbing stops 18F, 20F limit movement of the pawl 13F under the action of the armature spring 12F and magnet 1F, respectively, to one tooth stroke and ensure full tooth engagement of the pawl except when held from engagement by the cam 54F. A fivelobe cam 28, on the shaft 23, co-operates with five pairs of switch contacts 31I, 31II to provide for zeroizing, tens carry-over and pulse counting. A number of the stepping mechanisms may be placed side-by-side and the digits on the rollers 27 used for printing through carbon paper 45 (Fig. 10) on depression of a printing hammer 46. In modifications, the casing may comprise side plates held apart by distance pieces or may be hermetically sealed and filled with an inert gas.
