Abstract
857,109. Making moulds and mould cores. WALTER & CIE A.G. July 14, 1958 [July 16, 1957], No. 22459/58. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XXIX] Moulds and cores containing a medium such as water glass hardenable by CO 2 are hardened by applying CO 2 which has been first discharged in liquid form from pressure cylinders or storage containers and then passed through a vaporiser, the final temperature of the gaseous CO 2 being such as to produce rapid optimum hardening. The liquid CO 2 is stored in steel cylinders a, b, or a low pressure heat insulated container f maintained at a low temperature, and passes along a conduit c to a pipe coil inside vaporiser d, the temperature of which is maintained by an adjustable heating element e. From there the CO 2 gas passes through a reducing valve h and then at about 2 atmos. pressure into a discharge valve i. In the the case of water glass being used as binding medium, the temperature of the heat transferring liquid in the vaporiser d may, for example, be at about 85‹C. and the final temperature of the CO 2 will be about 35‹C. With high consumption of CO 2 and inadequately dimensioned heat transfer surfaces, the temperature of the gas may fall below the desired value and to avoid this a second pipe coil may be provided in the vaporiser which heats the cooled gas discharging through the reducing valve again to the desired temperature. So that the heat transfer liquid need be heated only slightly above the desired temperature, e.g. 35‹C., a small buffer vessel is arranged in the vaporiser and is constantly filled with a store of preheated CO 2 gas. The discharge valve is adjustable so as to control the amount of gas supplied to the mould or core.
