Abstract

A sterilizable vessel for the aseptic storage of liquids comprises a tank 1 surrounded by a jacket through which heating or cooling media may be passed via the conduits 2 and 3, the tank being connected with conduits whereby there may be introduced hot air (pipe 11, 6), a spray of sterilizing liquid (pipe 7) and the liquid contents (pipe 8). The pipes contain a series of valves 9, 14, 12 &c. which control the sterilizing /filling sequence, which is as follows: (i) hydrogen peroxide solution and sterile compressed air enter the tank via pipe 6 (the air from pipe 11, 6 via valve 14), the solution being atomised into a fine spray and the original air being expelled. (ii) valve 9 is closed and air at about 360‹C. from heater 13 is introduced via pipes 6 and 11. This decomposes the H 2 O 2 into nascent oxygen and steam, which sterilizes the tank, (iii) valve 12 is closed and valve 14 is opened, whereby cooled sterile air (from heater/cooler 21) is passed through pipes 10 and 7 into the tank and exits through valve 15 to dry out the tank, (iv) liquid from the sterilizing plant is introduced via the threeway valve 22. Pressure within the tank, both empty and full, is kept above atmospheric by a pressure equalizing system by means of a pressure regulater 16 which controls valves 19 and. 20 by means of a pressure-sensitive element whereby the pressure is maintained at a predetermined value by venting (through valve 19) or admission of sterile air (through valve 20).
