Abstract
856,886. Centrifugal pumps. BELL & GOSSETT CO. July 23, 1958, No. 23659/58. Class 110 (1). The self-priming centrifugal pump shown differs from that disclosed in Fig. 3 of Specification 856,885 in that the upper shroud 38 is extended so that its discharge end is in substantially the same vertical plane as the impeller axis, and the pump inlet is not provided with an anti-siphoning check valve. The discharge from the shroud 38 forms a liquid curtain that seals the open passage 46 against return of air into the impeller. When the pump is stopped, air can return through the passage 46 to break the siphon quickly and limit the loss of the priming reserve of liquid from the pump casing. The discharge end of the lower shroud 39 is substantially tangential to the concave bottom of the pump casing so that its discharge forms a cleansing stream that sweeps across the bottom of the casing. In other respects the pump is similar to that disclosed in Specification 856,885.
