Abstract

In the dyeing of textile materials comprising mixtures of linear aromatic polyester fibres and cellulose fibres with vat dyestuffs, the material is treated with a leuco vat acid suspension obtained by heating an aqueous mixture of a vat dyestuff and an excess of thiourea dioxide, then dried and heated (whereby the polyester fibres are dyed), and subsequently treated with an alkali and again heated (whereby the cellulose fibres are dyed). The latter heat-treatment may be effected in the molten metal equipment of Specification 620,584, a solution of the alkali floating on the molten metal at the entry. The first heat treatment, for example at 160 DEG -180 DEG C., may be effected by steam, electric means or infrared radiation. The acid leuco vat suspension may be obtained by heating, e.g., at 60 DEG -80 DEG C., an aqueous dispersion of the dyestuff and excess thiourea dioxide in the presence of a reduction catalyst such as anthraquinone, anthraquinone sulphonic acid or the sodium salt of anthraquinone carboxylic or sulphonic acid, a pH adjuster such as disodium hydrogen phosphate and a protective colloid such as naphthyl methane disulphonic acid. Conventional carriers for polyester fibres, such as dichlorobenzene, may be added to the leuco vat acid suspension.
