[Also in Group XXXVI] A double-focusing magnetic spectrometer comprises two independently-excitable coil systems 6, 7, one mounted on the central core 1 and the other on the inside of the shell 4, so that the required law of variation of axial field strength in the radial direction may be maintained at both high and low field values in spite of the non-linear effects of the iron present. Preferably the coefficient # of the quadratic term is either or #. As shown the core 1 and shell 4 are joined by shaped pole-pieces 2, 3 and each coil system contains six coils with symmetrical pairs connected in series, magnetic layers 8, 9 being interposed between the coils. A magnetometer arrangement (see Group XXXVI) may be employed to monitor the field distribution continuously so that adjustments may be made, automatically if desired, in the coil currents to maintain the required law.
