Abstract

Class 37 The level-sensing element of the apparatus described in Specificatior 750,858 for indicating the level of liquid in a tank is modified for the sensing of the position of a liquid interface by sealing off the interior of shield 5, either by the use of an insulating cap 30 (Fig. 3) in which the tip of sensing wire 1 is embedded, or by filling the shield with insulating material 34 such as a resin (Fig. 2). The wire 1 may have a horizontal portion at its lower end, protected from direct contact with liquid by the material sealing off the shield interior, to increase the capacitative sensing effect. By these means the interface f between a petroleum product p and water w is detected by the different capacitative loads on wire 1, the sensing element being made to follow the interface automatically by apparatus described in divisional Specification 855,796.
