Abstract
855,450. A.C. motors. MIDGLEY, A. H. Oct. 14, 1958 [Nov. 5, 1957], No. 34483/57. Class 35. In a self-starting synchronous motor comprising a field structure 2 which includes two sets of annularly arranged interspaced field poles 3, 4 of opposite instantaneous polarity when energized, each pole N, S of a two-pole permanent magnet rotor 1 is arranged to span at least five field poles and is divided into at least three sub poles 7 ... 9 in such a way that the polar angle between two adjacent sub poles is less than that between two adjacent stator field poles of like polarity whereby the angle of span of each subpole is so arranged that when the field is deenergized the rotor assumes an idle position of minimum reluctance and when energized immediately starts into rotation. As shown, the division is by radial slots 5 and the field structure comprises a cylindrical casing 10 and a coil 12.
