Abstract

854,863. Feeding and delivering sheets; stamp-cancelling. POSTMASTER GENERAL. May 9, 1958 [May 10, 1957], No. 15003/57. Classes 100(1) and 100(2) Stamp-cancelling and delivery apparatus:- Letters 28-31 separated from a stack and fed downwardly to continuously driven rollers 17, Fig. 3, intercept a beam of light 21 focused on a photo-electric cell 22 which controls a singlerevolution clutch in epicyclic gearing driving rollers 20 which deliver the letters to a stacking box. The arrangement is such that when the light beam 21 is intercepted the clutch is operated, after a suitable delay, so that the rollers 20 are moving with a peripheral speed equal to-the linear speed of a letter when they engage the letter, and feed the letter a distance equal to one half the circumference of the rollers. The rollers 20 swing the letter into alignment with an inclined wall 19. Upon the entry of a succeeding letter, the rollers 20 are again rotated, and the letter already engaged by the rollers, and the leading portion of the next letter, are fed a further step. The right hand roller 20 may be a stamp-cancelling roller, as it only engages the leading portion of each letter. The stacking box for the letters comprises an inclined floor 23, a movable stop 24, and a rotating starwheel 25, and is constructed as shown in plan in Fig. 4. Letters 28 are supported on end by spaced strips 70 supported on bolts 71 secured to an end wall 73. These bolts also support a guide wall 76 and brackets 77 which carry a shaft 78. A movable stop 79, which recedes as letters are stacked, comprises a plate secured to a block 80 mounted by two sets of ball bearings 82 on the shaft 78, and slidably supported by ball bearings on the guide wall 76. The stop plate 79 is urged to the right by means including a spring 85, cord 86, and pulley 87. A number of star-wheels 74 on a driven shaft 75 assist the stacking operation. Sheet separators and forwarders:- According to the Provisional Specification, a stack of letters 2, Fig. 1, supported on edge on an inclined base 1 is urged towards a front wall 3 by a metal roller 16, and the front letter either falls under gravity, or is fed downwardly by a driven friction roller 7, between a disc roller 5 having a soft friction tyre and a pair of disc rollers 8 having hard friction tyres. A shoe 15 serves as a guide for the letters. The disc 5 is driven clockwise to complete the separation of the letter from the stack but the two discs 8 are also driven clockwise to oppose the separation of the letter and serve to stop the separation of a second letter, if such has been separated at the same time as the first. The discs 8 are arranged on each side of the disc 5 on a shaft 11 which is carried by arms 9 pivoted at 10 and urged by springs 12 against an adjustable stop 13. A letter passing between the discs 5, 8 is slightly bowed transversely.
