Abstract

1,215,622. Feeding sheets. A. R. STOBB. 9 Jan., 1968 [16 Jan., 1967], No. 1216/68. Heading B8R. Signatures S are separated from the top of a stack 16 moved upwardly on a conveyer 24. Conveyer 24 has two separately movable sections 26, 27 each having at least one stack engager 28 such that at least two stacks of signatures may be simultaneously supported and transported by the conveyer. Signatures are separated by suction members 59, transferred to pivotally movable gripper 57 and then on to collecting conveyer 58. Conveyer sections 26 and 27 may be provided on each side of a hopper 10 having a floor 11. As stack 16 is being depleted a further stack 14 on base-plate 22 may be moved on rollers 23 and tipped into hopper 10 where it is engaged by the next pair of engagers 28 (on section 26 or 27). The appropriate conveyer section may then be moved at high speed to unite the stacks. A sensor 48 detects the top of the stack being advanced to the separator and causes the appropriate conveyer section to slow from its stack raising speed to a speed synchronized with the operation of the gripper. A sensor 67 detects a stack supporting plate and actuates arm 61 to engage the plate and move it on to a support 63. Shoe 73 aligns the stack as it advances upwardly.
