Abstract

712,608. Sheet delivery apparatus. POSTMASTER GENERAL. June 26, 1951 [July 5, 1950], No. 16845/50. Class 100 (1) In apparatus for stacking letters and like articles, e.g. leaving a stamp-cancelling or sorting machine, the letters to be stacked are passed between stack-feeding rollers 28, 29 rotating at a peripheral speed which is less than the speed at which the letters travel towards the stack-feeding rollers and the letters are thereby presented for engagement by projecting portions 35a of at least one rotating letter-stacking member 35 which rotates about an upwardly extending axis 36 and co-operates with an abutment or stop member 9 and a stack-supporting member 11 to cause the letters to form a stack. The letters, travelling along a conveyer 37 are deflected in selected destination boxes, of which there may be a plurality, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), by electromagnetically operated vanes 38 so that the letters are fed by diverter rollers 23 into a guideway 18 formed by guides 17, 19, and 32. The guides 32 consist of vertical grid-like structures in order to avoid wind resistance between them and the letters and carry the rollers 29 which co-operate with fixed rollers 28. The guides 32 are pivoted about a vertical axis 23 so that thick letters may pass between the stack feeding rollers 28, 29. The rollers 28, 29 are driven at a slower peripheral speed than the conveyer so that the letters may overlap one another when fed into the destination box. The rotating stacking member 35 may comprise a series of rotating polygonal discs, e.g. hexagons, or may be an elongated tubular shape polygon. The destination boxes comprise abutments 9 and a side wall 5 and an inclined stack supporting member 11. The member 11 is provided with a handle 22 and is pivoted about an axis in the base of the apparatus on which it may slide horizontally. The member 11 may be rotated about its axis clear of the letters when it is desired to remove them, Fig. 1 (not shown).
