In projecting mechanism for a retractable ball-point pen a plunger 6 carries a rod 8 extending normal to its axis with both its ends pro. jecting laterally from the plunger to be guided between two cam tracks 4, 5 having curved contoure located opposite one another and formed in the casing 1 or between hollow cylindrical bodies 2, 3 connected to the casing, of which one cam track has two axially spaced latch positions to determine the writing and retracted positions respectively of the spring-loaded writing unit. The writing unit is spring-retracted and engages the forward end of the plunger 6. The rear cam track 4 has alternate deep and shallow depressions 9, 10 in which the ends of the rod 8 are engaged alternately upon successive depressions of the plunger, the plunger being rotated slightly at each depression owing to the engagement of the rod ends with the lower toothed cam track 5 and then riding upwards under the influence of the writing unit return spring, when pressure thereon is released. Engagement of the rod 8 in the depressions 9 corresponds to the retracted position of the writing point, and its engagement in the depressions 10 corresponds to the projected position of the writing point.
