[Class 146 (iii)] A ball-point fountain pen of the type in which the writing point is normally held in a surrounding casing but may be projected for use against spring pressure by a knob comprises a lateral pin disposed between two opposed series of teeth formed or provided within the pen body, said pin being adapted to be positioned through guidance by the sloping sides of said teeth within one of a number of relatively deep slots formed between said teeth to locate the writing point in retracted position or within one of a number of relatively shallow spaces formed between said teeth to locate the ball point in writing position. The ball point pen 6 is projected against the action of a spring 9 by a knob 12 carried on a plunger 11 rotatably and slidably mounted in a sleeve 10. The sleeve 10 is screwed to the pen casing 1 and carries two sleeves 14 and 15 provided with teeth 16 and 17 offset by approximately half a pitch in relation to one another. The upper sleeve 14 is formed with elongated slots 18 which normally accommodate pins 13 carried by the plunger 11. When the knob 12 is depressed the pins 13 move out of the slot 18 and engage inclined portions of the teeth 17 which tends to rotate the plunger 11 so that when pressure is released from the knob 12 the pin 13 is retained by one of the teeth 16 thus holding the pen 6 in a projected position. The process is repeated to retract the pen. In a modification the sleeves may be revoluble, and the plunger 11 may be constrained to reciprocal movement only.
