Abstract
854,542. Pipe stoppers. STEWARTS & LLOYDS Ltd. Jan. 8, 1959 [Feb. 26, 1958], No. 6234/58. Class 99(1). [Also in Group XXIX] In a valve where a plate 2 is slidable or rotatable in a cross slot of a valve body so as either to blank off or to afford a clear passage through the body, the plate has sealing surfaces 5, 6 carried by at least one pair of spaced apart carrier rings 33 and by at least one pair of spaced apart carrier discs 44 and the spaces between such pair of rings and discs are closed by bellows 8, 9 so that the sealing surfaces are capable of relative movement so that they can be forced on to the valve seats in their operative position. The sealing force may be obtained by admitting or exhausting pressure fluid through cocks 10, 10 or 11, 11. Alternatively, the bellows may be filled with oil and connected to a bellows 19 of the differential bellows of an intensifier, Fig. 2, and the other bellows 17 communicates with the controlled fluid through inlet cocks 24, 25 and outlet cocks 26, 27. In another embodiment, Fig. 5, the carrier rings or discs, e.g. 3, 3, are constrained to move axially to each other by a pin 28, and a rotatable ring 29 carrying a lever 36, has a pin 30 engaging in a cam slot 31a, a carrier ring or disc so that rotation of the ring 29 by the lever causes axial movement of the carrier ring. The lever may be actuated by hydraulic, mechanical or electrical means.
