854,526. Force-feed lubricating. LA BOUR, H. E. March 4, 1957, No. 7122/57. Class 12 (3). [Also in Group XXVI] A mechanical seal for the vertical shaft 1 of a centrifugal pump, comprising a non-rotatable sealing ring 27 fitted in a hub 20 of a plate A attached to the pump casing and engaged by a sealing ring 42 secured to the shaft, is lubricated by oil supplied to the sealing contact faces by a feeder 52 secured to the shafts and having vanes 58 by which oil is pumped from a reservoir 23 surrounding the hub 20 and supplied with oil from an oil reservoir and level control unit 25 through a passage 27<SP>1</SP>. The reservoir 23 is open to atmosphere through a vent pipe 50 and the feeder 52 has pressure-equalizing holes 56 therein. An oil splash ring 59 is disposed radially outward of the feeder 52. When the shaft rotates oil is pumped by the vanes 58 from the reservoir 23 to the top surface 32 of the hub 20 which slopes inwardly and is provided with guide vanes 33 to direct the oil into the gap between the hub and the shaft and thus on to the top face of the sealing ring 42.
