853,389. Friction clutches; universal joints. TWIN DISC CLUTCH CO. Aug. 21, 1958, No. 26931/58. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXIX] The casing 18 of an hydraulic torque converter is coupled to a flywheel 12 on a drive shaft 11 by internal teeth 14 on the flywheel which mesh with external teeth 15 on a flanged disc 16 bolted to the casing, the teeth being lubricated by oil bled off from the converter. In the arrangement according to Fig. 1 oil passes through a passage 50 in the converter, over the faces of the disc 43 of a direct-drive lock-up clutch, and through bleed openings 72 in disc 16 into an annular chamber 74 in the flywheel rim, escape openings 76 being provided in the flywheel disc at a radial position which ensures sufficient depth of oil in annulus 74 to immerse the teeth. To ensure flow of oil when the clutch is engaged radial grooves are provided in one or both faces of disc 43. Engagement of disc 43 is effected by oil supplied through an inlet pipe 55 and the hollow output shaft 28 to an actuating piston 40. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 4 (not shown), bleed openings (82, 83) are formed in the hub portions of members 35, 16 and the oil flows directly through the space between the flywheel 12 and disc 16 to the annular chamber 74.
