The invention comprises in combination with a main internal-combustion engine 10 a starting engine 12 therefor and an hydraulic drive means 18 between the engines, pump means 23 for withdrawing lubricating oil from the main engine to supply the hydraulic drive means and a return line from the hydraulic drive means to the main engine whereby heat in the drive means will be dissipated and acquired by the main engine during starting thereof. There is a non-return valve in the return line to close the line when less than a predetermined torque is required to motor the main engine. The starting engine drives the pumping means 23.
