Class 100(1) Sheets are delivered from the impression cylinder of a printing press by a unit which is mounted for reciprocation towards and away from the cylinder, the unit comprising endless chain mechanism with grippers, and with chain runs substantially parallel to the reciprocating movements of the unit. As shown, the sheet delivery unit 34 is applied to a cylinder press of the kind wherein the impression cylinder 23 and the type bed 16 both reciprocate vertically, but in opposite directions, the driving means comprising cranks 21 on a drive shaft 22, connecting-rods 20, racks 18, 26, 30, and pinions 12. The delivery unit 34 is guided in horizontal guides in the press frame 11, and has a rack 37 engaged by a toothed segment 36 on an oscillating arm 35 pivoted at 36, whereby a simple harmonic motion is imparted to the unit. The unit 34 includes a pair of endless chains carrying two sets of grippers G, fixed adjustable cams for opening and closing the grippers, and means for driving the chains in one direction continuously and at constant speed during the reciprocatory movements of the unit. A sheet is taken from the grippers of the cylinder 23 when the unit 34 is in the position shown at A<SP>1</SP>. The unit is then moved bodily to the extreme position B, and since this movement is superimposed on the movement of the chains, the sheet is accelerated. On the return movement of the unit 34, since this is in opposition to the movement of the delivery chains, the sheet is retarded and is released to fall on the delivery pile 38 when the unit is at position C. The movement of the unit 34 is so timed that it is at A<SP>1</SP> when the cylinder 23 is in the up position and the type bed 16 in the down position.
