Class .100(2) [Also in Group XXIX] Hydraulic loading means for printing rollers of printing machines where the load is applied to the two ends of the printing roller comprises two pistons operating the ends of the roller through piston rods extending through the covers of hydraulic cylinders, the annular area of the piston surface around the piston rod of one piston being equal to the full area of the second piston and the annular piston area in one cylinder being placed in communication with the full piston area of the second cylinder, such that the two ends of the roller will be given equal movement when the annular area of the second piston is connected to exhaust and hydraulic pressure is applied to the full area of the first piston. As shown, a printing roller a is moved towards an impression surface b by piston rods g and h carrying pistons e and f respectively. The pistons e and j slide in cylinders c and d respectively, the top s of cylinder d being connected to the bottom u of cylinder c by a pipe q. Hydraulic pressure applied to the bottom t of cylinder d causes the piston f to supply fluid to the bottom u of cylinder c and since the annular area of the top of piston f is equal to the area of the lower side of the piston e the piston rods g, h are moved equal amounts. When the roller a engages the surface b, valves k and m are set to the Fig. 2 position to open the tops r, s of the cylinders to exhaust and the bottoms u, t to hydraulic pressure from sources j and i respectively. When it is required to retract the roller a, the valves k and m are set to the Fig. 3 position to supply hydraulic pressure to the tops r and s of both cylinders, the bottoms u and t being opened to exhaust. If desired, the roller may be returned to its initial position by spring pressure instead of hydraulic pressure.
