Abstract

852,236. Ratchet clutches. FORMSPRAG CO. April 2, 1959 [April 14, 1958], No. 11241/59. Drawings to Specification. Class 80 (2). In order to reduce wear in a sprag-type clutch, the races and sprags are made of tempered steel, the surfaces of the races being hardened by alloying with nickel, chrome and boron, and the sprags being surface hardened by alloying with chrome. This makes the surface of a sprag harder than that of a race and protects the sprag in respect of deterioration in which frictionally generated heat is a factor.
