Abstract

871,537. Ratchet clutches. BORG-WARNER CORPORATION. March 14, 1958 [March 25, 1957], No. 8349/58. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXXIV] In a one-way clutch or brake having sprags 11 carried in apertures in inner and outer cages 13, 12 and biased into engagement with inner and outer cylindrical races 16, 15, by tabs 17 on an energizing spring strip 14, wear during overrun is prevented by drag-spring strips 18 attached by lugs 20 to the inner cage 13 and having on assembly a bowed section 25 frictionally engaging the inner race to oppose the energizing spring 14 and maintain the sprags out of engagement with the inner race. A flange on the outer cage 12 frictionally engaging the outer race may serve the same purpose at the outer contact points. The drag-spring 18 also assists the energizing spring 14 during engagement. To facilitate assembly the drag-spring 18 may have a hook 22 sprung over the cage 13. Specifications 767,353 and 864,887 are referred to.
