Abstract
889,980. Ratchet clutches. BORG-WARNER CORPORATION. March 16, 1959, No. 9095/59. Class 80 (2). In a sprag clutch phasing of the tilting elements is ensured by individual segments located between and bearing against adjacent elements. As shown in Fig. 2, the sprags 5 are engaged by inner segments 23 carried on a rigid ring 22 and outer segments 21 on the normal operating spring 19. In a modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), outer segments are carried by the operating spring, but the inner ends of the sprags engage recesses in a rigid ring. According to the further embodiment shown in Fig. 9, the inner segments 55 are carried by the rigid ring 22 and the outer segments 61 are attached to their associated inner segments by radial leaf-springs 58.
