953,466. Roller clutches and brakes. BORGWARNER CORPORATION. July 19, 1960, No. 20261/63. Divided out of 953,465. Headings F2C and F2E. A one-way jamming roller type clutch or brake comprises an inner cylindrical race 1 and an outer camming race 12, with an intermediate annular reaction plate 31 formed with outer projections 35 and integral longitudinal cross-bars 32, springs 33 being located between these bars and the jamming rollers 4. When the clutch is fully engaged the reaction plate 31 floats with its projections 35 clear of the outer race 12, while if a sudden change to overrunning occurs the projections 35 engage the outer race so that the cross-bars 32 are held sufficiently spaced from the rollers 4 to prevent damage to the springs 33.
