Abstract

852,127. Discharge tubes. EITEL-Mc- CULLOUGH Inc. April 28, 1958, No. 13383/58. Class 39(1). [Also in Group XXXVI] In manufacturing a discharge tube having a plurality of envelope sections, the sections are separated by metallic bonding material so formed as to hold the ends of said sections apart and provide exhaust passages between them to allow evacuation or gas-filling, which is carried out in an enclosing chamber, the bonding material then being fused to close the passages and effect a seal. The envelope parts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 may be ceramic, which are metallized, and then brazed or soldered together across interposed shims 6, 7, 8, 9, in known manner. The rings 15 of brazing material, placed on either side of the shims, are corrugated or have some other irregular shape, so that when all the envelope parts are assembled inside an enclosing chamber 30, the device may be freely evacuated by evacuating the chamber. The brazing material is then melted to form a completely sealed envelope by a heating coil 27 also positioned within the chamber. Specifications 782,102 and 803,225 are referred to.
