Abstract

Low pressure - produced polyolefins are recovered from hydrocarbon solutions thereof by dispersing the polymer solution in a diluent hydrocarbon, maintained at at least 90 DEG F. and supplying sufficient diluent to establish a diluent-solution ratio so that the resulting mix temperature is below the precipitation temperature of the polymer and then recovering the precipitated polymer. Specified olefins are ethylene, propylene, 1-butene, 1-pentene, 1-hexene, 1-octene, 4-methyl-1- pentene, 4-methyl-1-hexene, 5-ethyl-1-hexene, 6-methyl-1-heptene and 6-ethyl-1-hexene. Specified solvents are propane, isobutane, n-pentane, isopentane, iso-octane, cyclohexane and methylcyclohexane. The concentration of polymer in solution may be within the range 2 to 8% and the ratio of diluent to solution in the range 1 to 5 volumes of diluent per volume of solution. The solution may be introduced at high velocity and finely subdivided, e.g. as a spray, directly into the diluent. Apparatus for carrying out the process is described.
