Abstract

1455932 Terminally reactive polymers JAPAN SYNTHETIC RUBBER CO Ltd 12 Feb 1974 [12 Feb 1973] 06354/74 Heading C3P Polymers containing functional groups at each chain terminal are produced by (1) reacting an alkali-metal-terminated polymer with an alkylene oxide or alkylene sulphide in a hydrocarbon medium having a solubility parameter of 7-2 or less at 25‹ C., and if desired (2) treating the product with an active hydrogen-containing compound, e.g. water, acetic acid or hydrochloric acid. Suitable hydrocarbons are propane, n-butane, isobutane, 1-butene, cis-2- butene, trans-2-butene, isobutene, n-pentane, isopentane, neopentane and 2,2,4-trimethylpentane. In Examples, di-lithium-terminated polybutadiene, polyisoprene and butadiene/ styrene copolymer are reacted with ethylene oxide: and di-lithium-terminated polybutadiene is reacted with ethylene sulphide; and the products are acidified to yield terminal hydroxyl or thiol groups.
