Abstract

851,534. Collapsible boxes. HOLMES, W. May 29, 1958 [May 30, 1957], No. 17147/57. Class 18. A knock-down box has sides 3, 5 and ends 4, 6 all hinged to the bottom member 1 which is provided with a groove 7 close to its outer periphery to receive the lower edges of the sides and ends, the top 2 also being provided with a corresponding groove to receive the upper edges of members 3, 4, 5, 6 and the ends 4, 6 provided with grooves to receive the end edges of sides 3, 5. The sides 3, 5 and ends 4, 6 are attached to the bottom 1 by hinges 8 and strips 9 respectively, the strips being made of flexible material to enable ends 4, 6 to be folded flat on sides 3, 5. The grooves to receive the ends of the sides 3, 5 are formed by parallel strips 10, 11 of wood or metal. Short bolts 12 are mounted on bottom 1 to enable the top 2 and the bottom 1 to be secured together when the box is collapsed and when it is erected they are held together by long bolts 15 hinged to the bottom by eye-pieces 15a and slidably held against the box by U-brackets 16. An angle-piece 18, with a pin (not shown) to pass through aperture 19, is provided as a temporary fastening device if the box is used without the top 2. Strengthening battens may be fitted to the sides and ends and the top and bottom may be reinforced round the edges by a metal frame and the groove 7 formed by metal strips. Off-set hinges may be used instead of flexible-strips 9. In a modification, Fig. 10, an angle-shaped frame 20 provides an upstanding flange 25 around the bottom 1 and top 2. Instead of bolts 12 the top is provided with tongues 26 at one end to engage apertures 27 in flange 25 while spacing members 28 are provided on the sides and other end to rest on marginal strips 21. One of the members 28 may be provided with a spring-loaded sliding bolt for locking top and bottom together. Specifications 733,331 and 784,649 are referred to.
