In a cupola furnace, slag incrustation is prevented and radial flow of the blast ensured by disposing each tuyere 3 below the windbox 1, connecting it thereto by an elbow 7 and a pipe 4 extending into said windbox, and providing a double-acting valve having a valve head 5 seating on the tube 4 and a valve head 9 seating on a small leak port 8 in the elbow 7. The valve stems 6 and 13 are pivotally connected at 12, and a handle 11 with linkage 10 is operated either manually or automatically in timed sequence, so that, when valve head 5 is closed, valve head 9 is open, and vice-versa. Passage of blast air down the pipe 4 and the elbow 7 substantially removes from it any circumferential movement, and when the valve 9 is open, hot gases pass from the furnace and out through the port 8 to melt any slag secretions on the tongue nozzle. The valves 5 and 9 may be provided with separate control handles.
