Abstract

850,670. Making electrical components; jointing by stamping. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. April 1, 1959 [April 2, 1958], No. 10611/58. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A crimping-tool for indenting the rim of a sealing pot 1 secured to the end of a metalsheathed electric cable 2 comprises: a pair of apertured metal plates 3, 4, the base-plate 3 having a larger aperture than the die-plate 4; a latch-plate 9 located between the plates and pivotally attached to the base-plate 3 so as to swing in a plane parallel to the plane of the base-plate and in contact with the adjacent face thereof and having in one edge a U-shaped slot 10, the width of which is less than that of the aperture in the base-plate so that when the latch-plate is swung to its operative position, in which it overlies the base-plate, the edge of the slot partially obturates the aperture in the base-plate, and means for drawing the base and die-plates towards one another, the surface of the die-plate facing the base-plate carrying a number of crimping teeth 11 spaced around the aperture in the plate. The base-plate and the die-plate are drawn together by spring-loaded clamping-screws 5. The wall of the U-shaped slot 10 in the latch-plate is stepped to form a seating 19. The crimping teeth 11 consist of four quadrant-shaped projections (Fig. 3) which extend to the peripheral edge of the die aperture 8 and present a triangular crimping surface 23 inclined at an angle of 35 degrees to the tool axis. The plates are made of sintered metal, e.g. powdered iron, which has been cyanide hardened. In operation, the cable is passed through the apertures in the base and die-plates and the sealing pot and the cable attached to it through the aperture in the base-plate. When the rear end of the sealing pot is clear of the base-plate the latch-plate 9 is closed and the cable is drawn back until the sealing pot is seated upon the seating 19 of the latch-plate. The base-plate and the die-plate are then drawn towards one another by the clamping screws and the crimping teeth indent the rim of the sealing pot to retain the closure disc in position in the end of the sealing pot.
