[Also in Group XXXIV] In an automatic adjusting device for brakes, clutches or the like, a close-coiled spring wired helix 23 is secured to both piston members 12 of a spot-type disc brake illustrated and a pin 33, having a limited axial movement relative to the end of 14 of each cylinder member 10, is held in frictional engagement with helix 23 whereby upon relative movement between the piston member. 12 and the cylinder member 10 the device is adapted to move in unison therewith through the limited axially movement and upon further relative movement between the members relative movement also takes place between the helix and the pin. The normal clearance of the brake pads 18 with the braking surfaces of the brake disc 1 is governed by the distance 35 between the surface of flange 30 of inset member 27 and the Belleville washer 32 when in the curved position illustrated in the Figure. When fluid under pressure is admitted to spaces 13, pistons 12 and friction pads 18 are forced to the adjacent friction surfaces of the disc 1 to apply the brake. If the clearance between the friction pads 18 and the disc 1 is equal to, or less than, the axially depth of the spaces 35, movement of the pistons 12 and their associated friction pads 18 towards the disc 1 will cause the pads frictionally to engage the disc before, or at the same time as, the spaces 35 are eliminated by axially movement of the pins 33 in unison with the pistons 12 and the consequent flattening of the Belleville washers 32 against the flanges 30 by the heads 34 of the pins 33. Should pad wear take place relative movement will take place between the pins 33 and the members 23 to ensure that brake clearance remains constant in the inoperative state of the brake. Folded annular rubber sealing members 20 are provided, not only to act as dust and dirt shields for the open end of the cylinder, but possess sufficient resilience to tend to force the piston against the hydraulic head of liquid in the system when the brake is inoperative. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 747,965.
