Abstract

850,648. Disc brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. March 4, 1957 [March 9, 1956], No. 7393/58. Class 103 (1). In a spot-type disc brake, the brake pads may be replaced by removal of the brake cylinders as a unit without disconnecting the hydraulic lines leading from the brake to the pressure source. In the embodiment illustrated, circular friction pads 17 mounted on metal backing plates 16 and mounted for axial sliding movement in a non-rotatable calliper housing 2, are forced into frictional contact with a rotatable disc 1 by means of hydraulically actuated piston and cylinder mechanisms 12, 9 which are mounted on each limb 3, 5 of the housing 2; the open end of each cylinder being presented towards and spaced a short distance from the housing 2. Each piston 12 is provided on the side remote from the base 26 of each cylinder 9 with T-shaped annular flange 13 which engages in a complementary-shaped slot 14 extending transversely through raised boss 15 on the backing plate 16. The backing plate 16 is thus normally movable with the piston 12 and the piston may be disengaged from the backing plate by transverse movement in line with the slot 14 in the backing plate 16 as seen in Fig. 3 to facilitate renewal of friction pads 17. Lugs 18 on backing plate 16 are each provided with a threaded hole 20 for the reception of an extractor to withdraw each piston to a position such that removal of the brake cylinders 9 may be effected. An automatic wear adjustment device is incorporated in each brake cylinder 9 comprising a split pin 23 frictionally engaging an axially extending central bore 22 in piston 12. The pin is provided with a head 27 which is mounted in a cap 25 secured centrally to base 26 of cylinder 9. A Belleville washer 28 is fitted between cap 25 and head 27 to normally force head 27 against base 26 of cylinder 9. The head 27 of the pin 23 is able to make a limited movement only against the washer 28, and this distance is equivalent to the required clearance between the associated pad 17 and the disc 1 when the brake is idle. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 747,965.
