Abstract

735,748. Disc brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., and BUTLER, H. J. May 27, 1954 [June 20, 1953], No. 17136/53. Class 103 (1). In a disc brake an annular plunger and cylinder mechanism is positioned coaxial with, and on each side of, the brake disc to force a plurality of friction pads axially to engage the disc such that a pivotal connection is provided between the annular plungers and the friction pads to enable the pads to tilt to compensate for variation in wear of the pads and irregularities in the surface of the disc. In the embodiment illustrated applied to a transmission brake for a marine engine, an annular copper disc 1 is secured to the propeller shaft of the engine and two non-rotatable annular plates 3 and 4 are located one each side of the disc and bolted together by means of bolts 5 which pass through spring members 6. The two plates 3 and 4 are each provided with a plurality of equispaced substantially segmental shaped holes 7 extending axially therethrough. Slidable in the holes are pads of friction material 8 which frictionally engage an adjacent face of the disc. When fluid-pressure is introduced into the spaces between annular plunger 13 and the closed end of annular cylinder member 14, the annular plunger is moved towards the disc 1 and annular plates 12 integral with the plungers 13 force the pressure members 9 and the friction pads 8 into frictional engagement with the disc. Reaction of the two annular cylinders 14 is taken by U-shaped straps 16 and flexible protective members 20 are provided to protect the plunger and cylinder mechanisms from foreign matter. The friction pads have sufficient clearance in the holes 7 to tilt, due to the part-cylindrical recesses 10 in the segmental shaped pressure members 9 and the complementary-shaped members 11 having a flat base secured to the annular pressure plate 12, so that the friction pads 8 may tilt when so worn as to ensure that full frictional engagement is effected and also to permit the pads to tilt to accommodate themselves to irregularities of the disc due to excessive heat. Other embodiments are described; one enabling the invention to be applied to a plurality of axiallyaligned, axially-slidable brake discs, the other describing an arrangement for use with a single brake disc in which the pads may be secured to each of the segments of an articulated annular carrier plate which is itself non- rotatable and axially slidable relative to the disc, a pivotal connection being provided between each of the segments and the plunger.
