Abstract

A method of manufacturing hardenable steel strip for clockwork springs or inlays for vehicle rubber tyres in which said strip has a carbon content of at least 0.4% which in a condition in which it consists of at least 80% of austenite, is cooled, and if desired, simultaneously deformed, so that on reaching the recrystallization temperature the steel consists of at least 80% of austenite, and whereafter the steel is deformed macroscopically in a temperature range between the recrystallization temperature and 10 DEG below the temperature at which martensite formation begins but above 100 DEG C., this deformation being so rapid that the austenite does not change at least to a predominant extent into a bainite-like or martensite-like structure, and which deformed austenite is subsequently transformed into bainite or martensite, is characterized in that the macroscopic deformation consists in a considerable flattening of round wire with only a small lengthening of the wire to form strip. in an example a round wire of 1 mm. diameter and having a composition 0.9% C, 0.5% Cr, 1% Mn and balance Fe is chilled from 930 DEG C. to about 230 DEG C. and then rolled out into strip 0.3 to 0.4 mm. thick and about 2 mm. wide. Specification 744,140 is referred to.
