Abstract
Fine austenite grains are produced in steel by rapidly deforming it, e.g. rolling, forging, extrusion or drawing, to produce a reduction of at least 25% in cross-section area while the steel is above the lowest temperature at which it is completely austenitic, preferably no higher than 300 DEG F. above, and below its grain coarsening temperature, e.g. at a temperature from 1400 DEG to 1700 DEG F., the deformation being completed prior to recrystallization to form elongated unstable austenite grains, then recrystallizing the steel at an austenitizing temperature, e.g. 1200 DEG to 1600 DEG F., no higher than the above to form fine austenite grains. The steel may be subsequently cooled, e.g. by quenching, furnace or air cooling, to transform it to a fine grained martensitic structure. A steel exemplified contains 0.64% C, 0.88% Mn, 0.28% Si, 0.83% Cr, 0.0006% B, balance Fe.
