Abstract
850,193. Casting composite articles. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Sept. 9, 1957 [Sept. 14, 1956], No. 22463/59. Divided out of 850,192. Class 83 (1). [Also in Group XXVII] A method of making a rotor having a number of serially-arranged inserts lying in closed configuration in the body thereof, comprises assembling the inserts in the relationship which they are to have in the rotor, retaining such inserts in assembled relationship by a tie-member encircling and forcibly engaging them, and casting body-forming metal about the assembled inserts and tie-member as a unit. The rotor may be for a combined magneto and electric generator, the inserts being permanent magnets spaced apart by interposed polepieces. The tie-member is made of metal which retains its integrity at the casting-temperature of the body-forming metal. In order to hold the tie-member in position on the assembled rotor, the magnets and the polepieces, or both, may have tiemember positioning-formations. The ends of the polepieces may be formed with magnet endreceiving recesses. In making the combined rotor and flywheel, the magnets 17, polepieces 19 and tie-member 62 are assembled as in Fig. 4. When the flywheel is of aluminium the tiemember 62 may be made from iron or steel.
