850,062. Optical apparatus. THOMPSON, J. C. Dec. 15, 1958 [Oct. 21, 1958], No. 33502/58. Class 97(1) A device for providing an apparent three dimentional effect in television or other pictures comprises a narrow membered rectangular frame c bordering the object to be viewed, and a number of superimposed thin rectangular transparent sheets bound as a single unit b by sealing around the edges and attached to the frame by fixing the two shorter sides of the unit to the two larger sides of the frame, so that the unit bulges outwardly from the picture or viewing aperture. A second such unit a, being longer and narrower than the first, may be attached to the shorter side of the frame, so that it bulges outwardly over and across the first unit. In a modification, the two units are replaced in the frame by a number of sheets moulded to a shallow bowl shape. Alternatively the transparent sheets in the frame are moulded with a series of corrugations across their widths. In a further embodiment, the frame may contain a combination of all three forms of sheet. Curved pieces of material may also be mounted in spectacle frames to produce an apparent stereoscopic effect in pictures.
