Abstract
570,584. Zoetropes. SHEPPARD, N. F. May 20, 1943, No. 8003. [Class 97 (i)] Apparatus for viewing a kinematographic picture sequence, of the kind in which successive pictures are viewed through different lenses, comprises a number of viewing lenses l<1> ... l<5> ... arranged in one or more rows in a plane and supported in a frame m opposite to a flat base a, e.g. the page of a book, carrying the images 1 ... 5 ... , the spacing of which is the same as that of the lenses, so that relative movement between an observer's eye and the row of lenses causes each image to be seen through a different lens in succession, giving a kinematographic impression. Opaque or translucent partitions o may extend downwardly to restrict the view through each lens to the corresponding picture, and may serve to support the frame carrying the lenses: The lenses may be moulded integrally of a plastic material, and the screening partitions or supporting means, or both, may also be plastic mouldings integral with, or separate from, the lenses. Two rows of lenses may be used, corresponding to a double row of pictures, which may comprise a cyclic sequence viewed from left to right in one row and from right to left in the other. Fig. 3 shows a double-row picture sequence in which a picture in each row of a pair is viewed alternately, for which purpose the viewing lenses l<1>, l<2> ... are alternately inclined in opposite directions.
