Abstract

491,672. Stereoscopic kinematography; optical systems. CAIRNS, A. April 22, 1937, No. 11507. [Class 97 (i)] i Stereoscopic picture elements are viewed by means of one or more, fixed or moving, strips of plane mirror, the arrangement being such that reflected images of the elements are seen only by the appropriate eyes and in apparent superposition. Fig. 2 shows the principle of the invention, c, c<2> being two candles spaced 63 mm. apart and placed about 20 feet from a mirror strip m about 5 mm. wide. Eyes in the positions r, l respectively see an image of one candle only, the two images being of different candles. Two mirror strips m, m<2>, Fig. 4, may be angularly adjusted so that images of corresponding elements p, p<2> of stereoscopically related pictures may be seen by the eyes r, l of an observer, and a plurality of pairs of such strips may be provided to enable other, laterally placed, observers to see the same picture strips. The pictures may be kinematograph or other pictures projected side by side or one above the other from images correspondingly arranged on a film or separately projected, one of the mirror strips being suitably inclined when the images are one above the other. The strips may be reciprocated laterally to scan the complete pictures, or may be carried on an endless continuously-moving band for this purpose.
