Abstract
A system for viewing plane pictures is said to produce a para-stereoscopic effect and comprises means for dividing a vertical marginal band on each side of the picture into alternating vertical strips X, Y and screen means which prevents both eyes of a viewer from seeing alternate strips X of each band while permitting only one eye to see the strips Y of one band and permitting only the other eye to see the strips Y of the other band. In the embodiment of Fig. 2a each marginal band ADFE of a picture is covered by a lenticular plate 13 which carries on its surface adjacent the picture a plurality of spaced vertical strips 15 which screen alternate strips of the marginal band from both eyes. The lenticular surface 16 of the plate 13 is formed of a plurality of cylindrical lenses parallel with the strips 15. The surface 16 refracts light from between the strips 15 so that for each marginal band the alternate strips of the picture which are not covered by the strips 15 are visible to one eye only. In a modification the lenticular surface 16 is replaced by a planar surface which carries further vertical opaque strips. In a further embodiment, the plane picture is first decomposed by means of an optical system Figs. 3, 4 (not shown) so that adjacent vertical strips of the picture are displaced horizontally in opposite directions. Both eyes are prevented from seeing alternate marginal strips of the picture by placing a screen in front of the marginal strips which have been displaced away from the centre of the picture. The remaining strips of the picture are then selected for viewing by one or other eye by means of a lenticular plate as before or by means of a plate comprising a series of spaced opaque vertical strips.
