Abstract

A liquid washing composition contains as its essential ingredients sodium orthosilicate, sodium metasilicate and potassium tripolyphosphate in amounts such that the weight ratio per cent of the composition of Na2O:SiO2:P2O5 is 2.6-3.6:1.7-2.3:2.4-3.3. A suitable composition comprises by weight (a) 4.5-6.0% sodium orthosilicate (42% Na2O, 20% SiO2, 38% H2O), (b) 2.8-3.5% sodium metasilicate pentahydrate (29% SiO2, 29% Na2O, 42% H2O), (c) 5-7% potassium tripolyphosphate, (d) 14-18% alkali metal aryl sulphonate, preferably sodium xylene sulphonate, (e) 4-6% organic wetting agent, which preferably consists of a mixture (by weight) of 65-75% of a condensation product of ethylene oxide and polypropylene oxide having an average molecular weight of 2,500, 8-12% of a similar condensation product with an average molecular weight of 2,000, and 15-20% of isooctylphenoxypolyethenoxyethanol, and (f) 69.759.5% water.
