Abstract

A uniphase aqueous detergent composition comprises (a) a non-ionic detergent manifesting a cloud point, and (b) less than 25% (by weight of (a)) of a quaternary ammonium halide detergent, the solution containing not more than 80% (by weight of (a)) of inorganic salts and being substantially free of alkali metal silicates, phosphates, carbonates or bicarbonates. Component (a) is preferably a condensation product of ethylene oxide and an alkylphenol, the condensate of 8-10 mols. of ethylene oxide with 1 mol. of octylphenol being particularly suitable. Other suitable non-ionic detergents include ethylene oxide or ethylene oxide/propylene oxide condensates of long chain alcohols and fatty acids. Component (b) preferably comprises 5-16% of (a) and is most suitably an alkyltrimethylammonium chloride, although several other types of quaternary ammonium compound, including pyridinium compounds, may be used. The composition is preferably such that a solution thereof containing 0.2% of (a) has a cloud point at least 5 DEG C. higher than that of an 0.2% solution of (a) alone.
