Abstract

849,678. Drying materials in long lengths. AMERICAN VISCOSE CORPORATION. Sept. 20, 1957 [Dec. 17, 1956], No. 29593/57. Class 34(1) Plastic film &c., is dried by passing over heated rollers 1, 1, Fig. 1, in countercurrent to hot air which is blown into contact with the rolls from above and below at such a velocity that it moves through the drying housing without the aid of a static pressure differential therein. Air is blown in through conduits 30, 30<SP>1</SP>, each of which has an elongated jet nozzle 44, Fig. 5, opening into a space adjacent the rolls. The latter are boxed-in by an hydraulically suspended sectioned ceiling 15, side panels 13 and end panels which are slotted for film entry and exit. Moisture and 'vapour-laden air is conducted from the rolls through discharge scoops 34 and is passed through suction pump assemblies (not shown), for re-entry, with make-up air, to the conduits 30, 30<SP>1</SP>, after processing to remove impurities and adjust the humidity and temperature. For threading the film through the rolls the ceiling sections 15 are removed. The air is guided along the tops of the rolls by suspended baffles 45, Fig. 3, and observation windows 50 are incorporated in the ceiling 15.
